House Speaker Paul Ryan and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday vowed to push forward with an investigation into the allegations of Russia’s influence on the 2016 election, including possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.
The move by the two top leaders came after former FBI Director James Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday.
Ryan and McConnell made the announcement at the start of a two-day meeting of the House and Senate Intelligence committees.
In a joint press conference, Ryan and his GOP counterpart Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) described the committee’s investigation as “part of the ongoing inquiry.”
“The Russians, they’re not only hacking into our democracy but they’re also trying to interfere in our elections,” Ryan said.
“They’re trying to hack into our military.
They’re trying, they’ll hack into the United States military.
And they’re trying our electoral process.
So, I don’t think you’re going to see any signs of that stopping anytime soon.”
“As I said before, we’re going after the fake news.
The fake news is fake,” Warner said.

The president on Monday issued a veiled threat to Republicans in Congress who are probing whether the Russians meddled in the election.
He also vowed to continue the campaign against fake news, and said the Republican party “is the opposition party.”
Ryan and other GOP lawmakers are also looking into allegations that Russia attempted to interfere with the election by hacking Democratic officials’ computers and emails.
On Monday, President Trump issued a tweet suggesting the Democrats were “hacking our computers and stealing our info” and accused them of “hiding behind fake news.”
The tweets came after The Hill reported that the Democrats “did not even try to hide behind their fake news!”
