SAN FRANCISCO — The NFL has expanded its food stamp program to include restaurants and bars, with the NFL Food Bank saying the expansion was the result of the league’s work with the food pantry.
The NFL Food Program is now an official part of the NFL, which says the program now has more than 50,000 members, and now also includes food for all its members, said the NFL’s public affairs department.
The league has been running the program since at least 2014 and has more recently expanded it to include bars, restaurants and food courts.
According to the NFL Program, which includes the food banks of the New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, Seattle Seahawks and Miami Dolphins, it’s now a $3.4 million program that covers food, clothing and housing for more than 6,000 food pantries and food distribution centers in the United States.
The program is designed to make food available to food insecure households, and it includes food and household supplies for the NFL Players Association, which provides a majority of the money, and the NFL Foundation, which gives the program money to help feed hungry players.
The NFL’s food bank serves more than 4 million people, according to the program’s website.
The new expansion of the program is part of NFL President Eric Grubman’s push to create a national food bank system and to help address the hunger issue that has plagued the league in recent years.
In 2015, the NFL and NFL Foundation partnered to create the NFL Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The program provides food for needy NFL players and their families.
